When scanning we always ask what is your intention for the end file. ie. what do you intend to do with it?
This simple question can often determine what service and what resolutions you will require etc. We usually work on 300dpi at the size you require on large enlargements to give you the correct file size Meg for your intended use.
The Majority of scanners will max out at 4000dpi. This is the resolution required to go down to the film grain on 35mm film. A 4000dpi 35mm Scan yields an approx 65mb File, this will allow perfect printing up to A3 and larger
Medium format offers larger file sizes and usually between 200-350mb at the same resolution
Drum scanning and our high end CCD scans can push these up higher if required by using enlargement factor and higher dpi
If in any doubt just give us a ring and we will be happy to discuss options for your project you have in mind so your originals are scanned with the correct service to start with.
